Win 32 error#5

Post by htgits »

Hello

Host Monitor 5.66 running on a Domain based laptop running Windows XP sp 2.

I am monitoring services accounts running on several WAN (workgroup) based PC's.
All the pc's that are running Windows 2000 are fine and can be monitored.
All the pc's that are running Windows XP sp1 cannot be monitored.
There are no firewalls set, RPC and Remote Registry services are running and the service that is to be monitored is set to Interact with the Desktop.

The question is; what else does XP need?

What the status of the test(s)? Bad? Or Unknown?
I assume Unknown. It means "Access is denied" was returned by OpenSCManager (Windows API).
Quote from Microsoft http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/defau ... rights.asp
Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP:
Remote authenticated users are granted the SC_MANAGER_CONNECT, SC_MANAGER_ENUMERATE_SERVICE, SC_MANAGER_QUERY_LOCK_STATUS, and STANDARD_RIGHTS_READ access rights. These access rights are restricted as described in the previous table as of Windows Server 2003 SP1

Windows 2000/NT:
Everyone is granted the SC_MANAGER_CONNECT, SC_MANAGER_ENUMERATE_SERVICE, SC_MANAGER_QUERY_LOCK_STATUS, and STANDARD_RIGHTS_READ access rights.
It looks like HostMonitor was not authenticated on XP system. But authentication was passed on Windows 200 system (HostMonitor uses another Windows API call with access rights that require authentication). So, I assume you have specified correct username and password on Service page in the Options dialog. Right?
Do you see message like "Logged on as user ..." in NT Event Log?
Also do you use "Connect As" parameter of the test or you are using "Connection Manager" to specify login that should be used for conections?

I think you have correct settings because Windows 2000 processes requests. Why XP does not work? Who knows, only Microsoft. We often have different troubles with XP after security updates. Then error can disappear after next patch

Win 32 error#5

Post by Dean »

Hi guys,

I'm evaluating Host Monitor 5.66 for my organization.

The "Win 32 error#5" depends on how your OS translates the server name (or IP address) typed in "Check service on" field - apart from techies, try to type "\\" before server name/IP address and it should be working fine, e.g.:

\\MyServer

or

\\192.168.100.100

Hope this helps,

Regards
