Can't connect to the Web Service after MS update
Can't connect to the Web Service after MS update
After doing a routine "high priority" Microsoft update, I cannot connect to the web service on my Host Monitor server from any machine. I get the following message:
Transmission error (Web Service <-> HostMonitor): "Cannot read data"
Possible reasons:
- HostMonitor is not running
- RCI interface disabled
- HM Web Service configured incorrectly (wrong TCP Port or IP address)
- network problem
I have not changed anything on server or desktop. I can see the number under served connections go up each time I try to connect. Any help?[/img]

Probably HostMonitor cannot open RCI port because port used by another application?
You may check system log (specified on System Log page in the Options dialog). Do you see message like "Cannot activate RCI. Probably port #... is in use"?
Could you try to change port number? E.g. setup port 5054 instead of 1054? Note: you should change port for HostMonitor and Web Service.

Alex

I have turned the firewall off and used several different ports for RCI. Same message. This is the full message I get:
Response from HostMonitor's Web Service:
Transmission error (Web Service <-> HostMonitor): "Connection error"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible reasons:
- HostMonitor is not running
- RCI interface disabled
- HM Web Service configured incorrectly (wrong TCP Port or IP address)
- network problem
The browser is defiantly seeing Host Monitor and the Web Service. Any other advice?

If RCI is enabled, I think, some other application occupied the port, specified in "Options" -> "RCI" tab. You may use our "IP-Tools" program ( http://www.ks-soft.net/ip-tools.eng/index.htm ) to see what application uses specified port. Also you may execute the following command in command line prompt: netstat -nao
Could you try it please?

Advice is the same - please check the log

May be there are some different error messages. Who knows... Please check the log.
BTW: What version of HostMonitor do you use? Windows? Service Pack?
HostMonitor and Web service started on the same system?

Defiantly not the port. I have been changing the ports as the first thing to try. I did however run a port scan and I saw nothing using the ports I tried.
I can't open the log.htm or the syslog.htm files. They are 321MB and 1GB in size. The server freezes when I try to open them. Any ideas on how to resolve that so I can figure out the Web Service problem.

You may use some text editor instead of web browser to open log file...
Also we can send you simple command line tool to cut files.

Are you sure HostMonitor is running right now?

Can you give me the info to cut the files. I can't open them using anything.
I have Host Monitor 7.78, the newest version.
I have it on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2.
Host Monitor and Web Service are running on the same system.
Host Monitor IS running.
Like I said the only thing that was changed was 2 MS Windows updates, KB961118 and KB967715. Nothing else has changed and Host Monitor has been running fine for months.

Probably, the most appropriate solution is to set new file name s for HostMonitor log ("Options" -> "Log Settings"/"Primary Log" tab) and system log ("Options" -> "System Log" tab). Once you specify new file names HostMonitor will record new events into new log files.cbibolet wrote:Can you give me the info to cut the files. I can't open them using anything.
Anyway, I just ask you to perform the following command in the command line prompt: netstat -nao | find "1054" Instead of 1054 you should specify the port number, specified in "Options" -> "RCI" tab. In the last column you will see the process ID (PID) of the process listening specified port. You may use standard "Task Manager" applet to identify application, this PID belongs to. Is it HostMonitor?cbibolet wrote:Defiantly not the port. I have been changing the ports as the first thing to try. I did however run a port scan and I saw nothing using the ports I tried.
Ok, we will try to install update KB961118. But this update is related to .Net Framework, so I do not know how it can affect HostMonitor. KB967715 is already installed on our server.cbibolet wrote:Like I said the only thing that was changed was 2 MS Windows updates, KB961118 and KB967715. That was it! The port number was different on the Options RCI in Host Monitor than the port listed in the Web Service.
Strange... I didn't change anything but the port numbers were different. I didn't think I would have to change something that could change itself.
Is there any tool in Host Monitor to manage the log files, so they don't get too big?

Sure. There are "Special file processing" options located on "Options" -> "Log Procesing" tab. Please, read the following topic for details: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... processingcbibolet wrote:Is there any tool in Host Monitor to manage the log files, so they don't get too big?
