DNS Test: Reporting The Resolved Address?

Post by timn »

Alex:

With DNS test, is it possible to report the address (as resolved)
when I send an email alert? For example, I'm trying this:

%CommentLine1%= Name of DNS Server
%CommentLine3%= Name that was resolved ('www.myhost.com')
%CommentLine4%= Expected IP address

Code: Select all

Specifically, an attempt was made to resolve the name {%CommentLine3%}

The expected reply was: {%CommentLine4%}

But the actual reply from %CommentLine1% was: [%Reply%]
But %Reply% reports the response time in milleseconds..

Thanks!

Sorry, DNS test does not provide such option.
I think you may use our lookup utility ( www.ip-tools.biz/download/lookup.exe ), utility was designed to be used by Shell Script test method and returns IP address as result

Thanks, Alex. This solution might work well. I noticed that the lookup.exe you pointed me to uses the local machine's DNS settings. But I need to query a specific DNS server...

I searched the documentation for Lookup and found reference to "Advanced" where I can specify the DNS server to query, but I didn't see an explanation of how to do this.

lookup shell script utility does not offer "advanced" options. Probably you are reading IP-Tools manual?
http://www.ks-soft.net/ip-tools.eng/index.htm
http://www.ks-soft.net/ip-tools.eng/mfr ... htm#page10

If you need to check specific server and send returned IP address, then we have to modify HostMonitor (store DNS test results, provide new macro variable, etc). I can add new task into "to do" list but we cannot implement this right away. Probably after version 6.70

Just tested this using 6.72 -- works great -- exactly what we needed. Thanks!

BTW, the new VIEW feature also rocks!

Well, here it is, May of 2009 and I just went looking looking for exactly the same thing! %DnsResult% - Yes!

Have I mentioned lately what great tool Host Monitor is!
