Hi,
Since a few days we have again and again problems with different service checks (test method service). They will be shown down, although they are up.
On the HM server is also a Windows SQL Server 2005 installed, which will take about 1,2 GB on memory, when I restart the SQL serivce, the sqlsrv.exe will take only about 60 mb, although it will rise to about 1,2 GB.
It seems, that after a restart from the SQL service, the HM problems are gone.
Although the server has 4 GB memory installed. There is no AntiVirus installed. As far the problems are only with the service check test method.
Do you have any idea, why the SQL server will cause this problems?
Thanks,
Martin
Problem with service checks
May be it eats other resources as well (e.g. handles)? When some process takes too much system resources Windows may become unstable.Do you have any idea, why the SQL server will cause this problems?
What exactly means "show down"? What is the status of the test? Bad? Unknown? No answer?
Regards
Alex
Thanks, I will have a look on thisone can limit the memory size a MS SQl grows up to.
Just google for it (sorry, I do not remember, it's a setting in the SQl enterprise manager). Maybe that helps?
A system process will take about 5000 handles and the adress space from the sqlsrv.exe is about 2800 mb - sorry, but I don't know how to rate this values?May be it eats other resources as well (e.g. handles)? When some process takes too much system resources Windows may become unstable.

The status from the test will be unknown, reply: Win32 error #1726

According to Microsoft manual this means "The remote procedure call failed"The status from the test will be unknown, reply: Win32 error #1726
Its not a big problem if just 1 process uses so many handles... What is the total resource usage on the system?A system process will take about 5000 handles and the adress space from the sqlsrv.exe is about 2800 mb - sorry, but I don't know how to rate this values?
Windows 2000 does not work well when there are about 12,000 handles allocated. Windows XP and Windows 2003 can handle over 20,000 but 25,000-30,000 can be a problem as far as I know (there are no official documents regarding this matter)

The overal handles are at about 17-20.000.Its not a big problem if just 1 process uses so many handles... What is the total resource usage on the system?
It's a Windows 2003 R2 server, the hm service has about 2300 handles, a system process about 5.000 and then there are some process with about 1000-2000 handles.
CPU is very low and memory about 1,7 Gb from 4.
You have no idea, why just the service checks fail and all other tests are fine?

When Windows shows "The remote procedure call failed" error, I assume tests like Process and CPU Usage should fail as well. Am I wrong?
There are a lot of reasons for this error but in your case its somehow related to MS SQL Server. Sorry, we don't know what exactly is wrong.
Have you asked developers of SQL Server?
There is some bug report regarding MS SQL and "The remote procedure call failed" error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253810
But I am afraid its not related to your case.

We have all kind of test, especially on the failing servers, we have also CPU, UNC, Count Files, ... tests, and they are all working fine. What exactly "other tests"?

The service check will fail on serveral servers, not only on one special server, so it's realy a little bit confusing.
Although in a few weeks, we will move the SQL server from this server, so we will see then, if the problems will be gone.
Thanks for all your search also in the microsoft kb.

Martin
