Email Setup and Testing

Post by markholland8 »

Hi All I'm hoping you can help.

I own a large hosting company in the UK and have downloaded a trail copy of Hostmonitor. I have tried everything to set up the email but i just can not do it.

I have set up the primary and backup smtp servers and thats it.

Please help its driving me crazy.

I just need to set up 500 url monitors and then receive an email when one doesn't respond.

Also is there there a way to test it once setup.

Thanks Mark Holland

Email Setup and Testing

First, you should create Action profile:
1. Use menu Profiles -> Action profiles.. to create new Action profile.
2. Add "Bad" status action (e.g. Send e-mail (SMTP))
Note: you may use Condition to start action: Repeat until status changes for testing.
3. use "Mailer settings..." button of "Action properties" dialog to check/modify SMTP server settings.
SMTP settings may look like the following:
Address: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465 TLS: Implicit
Auth: Plain
Login: myemail@gmail.com
Password: myemailpassword

Then, you may create new URL request test item:
1. Use menu Test -> New -> URL test to create new URL request test
2. Specify URL (e.g.: http://google.com)
3. Select Alert profile, created in previous section
4. use "Reverse alert" option for testing.

If HostMonitor can't start actions, it writes error message to system log (menu View -> System log).
We recommend to read this article to investigate actions related problems:

Please check the manual or visit our web site for more information about:
Condition to start action: Repeat until status changes: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... htm#Repeat
Reverse alert option: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... tm#Reverse

As I can see from your log "To (recipients):" field of Action properties dialod is filled by incorrect e-mail address: my email@gmail.com
Also such error might be caused by firewall or antivirus. Symantec and McAfee real-time monitoring modules often leads to problems related to SMTP protocol.
Are you sure firewall is disabled ?

You have specified correct parameters for GMAIL server.
"Connection refused" means target server or some application/device in the middle drops connection.
As we see gmail works fine right now. So if you can repeat action and it still does not work then there must be some 3rd party device or application that drops connection.
Which one? Sorry, we don't know. Try to disable AVG, antiviruses often lead to various problems
