Log file test does not refresh logfile size

Post by KerryPatrick »

We have a couple of tests set up on remote servers which are set to alert if the log file is NOT greater than 0kb. This past week we have been alerted that the test is BAD, however as soon as you log into the remote server in question, you can see the size of the log file within explorer go from 0kb to the correct current size and the test recovers.

We have 4 of these tests which were copied so the test details are all the same apart from the logfile location. Are you able to suggest why the one server does not show an up to date log file size while the other servers do not alert please?

Could you please provide more details?
Windows on HostMonitor system?
Windows on remote system?
Service Pack?

HostMonitor version?
HostMonitor started as service or application?
If test is performed by agent, RMA version?

What test method do you use? Folder/File size? Do you use UNC path to shared resource or you are using mapped drive?
May we see test settings?

Regards
Alex

HostMonServer is Win 2003 server Sp2
Remote server is Win 2008 SP1
HostMon version 9.12
HostMon running as an application
Test is performed by HostMon
Test method is folder/file size via UNC path, not mapped
We are asking it to alert when size greater than 0Gb, but with the Reverse alert ticked

We cannot reproduce the problem using the same OS/HostMonitor.

What is strange "however as soon as you log into the remote server in question, you can see the size of the log file within explorer go from 0kb to the correct current size and the test recovers".
Probably Windows and HostMonitor works just fine? May be your script/application works only with active user session so it updates log only if you logged in?

I see what you are saying, however we are not logging in to view this in explorer, it is already connected. It just appears that the size of the file is refreshed if you view through explorer rather than Host Mon checking the file size. Also, we run the same test to log files on 5 other servers and these do not alert as they seem to be correctly reporting the size of the log file

??
Could you try to setup Count Files test method for the same target folder using *.* file mask and execute this test before Folder/File Size test (just select test and press Space) to check if file size will be updated correctly?
