SMS Messaging coming through as jiberish

Post by CountiesPowerAdmin »

We have Hostmon v7.5 installed on a Windows XP 2002 machine.

We have configured a GSM modem in the back of the machine to send out SMS alerts. It is a Maestro 20GSM type modem.

Our mobile phones operate on one of two network: Telecom NZ or Vodafone NZ.

For the past 2 months the SMS alerting has been working correctly.

HOWEVER...

Within the past week the SMS alerts that are being sent through to all of the Telecom mobiles are coming through as mixture of symbols and letters that is essentailly garbage. As opposed to "Server X is down" we get "sdlfnriuenkef gver".

I am not sure if this is a Telco provider network issue or if it is something wrong with the configuration of Hostmon.

To further complicate the issue, some Vodafone mobiles are now failing to receive the SMS alerts at all.

As a point of interest... the garbage that I recieve on my Telecom phone always has the correct FIRST letter (i.e. "Server is down" will be "Sdslfndskgfn").

Can anyone advise what might be causing this issue? :(

I think you should talk to your cell phone provider..

or may be you have installed some firmware update on Maestro modem that leads to the problem?
Can you send SMS from another cell phone to Telecom phone without problems?

Mobile SMS messages from Vodafone to Telecom are fine.

There have been no firmware but grades on the modem.

My telco contacts are coming back empty.

I am going to remove the SIM card from the modem and see if that can send SMS messages when it is in a phone.

The SIM card will send messages fine if it is in another phone.

I have heard nothing from our Telco provider to indicate that their network is at fault.

This leads me to believe that the problem is with the GSM modem. :-?

We wish to replace it.

Are we able to use ANY GSM modem with Hostmon or must it be one that is listed in the Option menu?

Also, we have a USB modem from Telecom that is able to send SMS messages. Can this be configured from Hostmon at all?

Thanks in advance. :)

Then it looks like some problem with your modem... could you try to reset its settings to factory defaults?

Its impossible to test and support all GSM modems/cell phones.
What we listed in the manual - modems that were tested.
Some non-listed modems may work just fine, other will not work.

We have replaced all of these features and the SMS jiberish still remains:

- The server
- The GSM modem
- The Telco network
- Send from the GSM modem drectly (independent of Hostmon)

The only other thing I can think of is that the LOCATION of a aerial is the key factor.

Regardless of what it is, we have found that Hostmon is not the problem.

Thank you for your help.
