Alert/Graph based on text log number

I have log file that always contains 1 line which is an integer. It is updated every 10 minutes.

Is it possible to make a test based on treating the number in the line as an integer value rather than a string.

Say alert if less than 10 and also graph the output?

I worked around it by scripting the value to be written to the registry then using a registry test to read the value.
