how do i add a server?

Post by dtsobel »

I am testing the software as our new manager has used this before. I am not finding anything intuitive about this software an have tested other monitoring solutions.

I have looked at the documentation and finding simple add computer and monitor these items.

There is no "add computer" option. HostMonitor uses term "test item" - specific test method performed for target system.
Simply use top menu Test -> New -> [Select test method].
Supported test methods:

Is there any default template of various tests? I need to have standard items like CPU and Memory and disk health and space.

Is there a way to monitor hardware on HP servers? I need to monitor raid array health

You may organize test items into folders/subfolders that can represent networks, computers etc.
I would recommend to start from the following manual parts:
1. General information about test items: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mframe.htm#tests.htm
2. Test templates: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... #templates
3. Actions/Action profiles: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... ctions.htm
4. Remote Monitoring Agent (RMA) [active/passive]: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/rma-win/index.htm
5. Remote Control Console (RCC): http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/rcc/index.htm

I do need to be able to see servers as host names. I have created folders for our different sites and need to be able to look at a server name to see what is going on.

You may use SNMP GET test to retrieve information using SNMP protocol: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... tm#chkSNMP
Please note, you may need to install Insight Management WBEM providers agent.

It depends on what exactly HP hardware do you use and what exactly software have you installed.
OS: Windows? Unix? VMWare ESXi?
Do you have installed SNMP agents or HP Insight Management WBEM Providers?

I have both installed. They are all windows servers.

I need to see server name so I know what server is having issues.

When you setup test, you should provide hostname or IP address. You should know hostname or IP address before you setup test.
If you need to discover your network, use IP-Tools, Replicator or some 3rd party software
IP-Tools: http://ks-soft.net/ip-tools.eng/index.htm
Replicator: http://ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/replicator/index.htm

So for each test I setup, I need to put the host name in? That makes setting up each server very tedious.

Is there a display name and IP? Many of our servers are not in the windows domain and our DNS will not resolve to IP.

Just provide IP in host field and provide name in Test name field(Test properties dialog)
