POP3 test failes to logon to Office365

Post by Prometheus »

Hey guys,

Maybe some of you already had this but the last few day my POP3 test to Office365 keeps failing on the login procedure. I'm 99.9% sure this problem is with Microsoft but I was wondering if I'm the only one having this problem?

This is my test:
-------------------------------------------------
Title = Testname 1
Disabled = No
Comment =
RelatedURL =
ScheduleMode= Regular
Schedule =
Interval = 300
Alerts = DBA - SLA - 14x6
ReverseAlert= No
UnknownIsBad= Yes
WarningIsBad= Yes
UseCommonLog= Yes
PrivLogMode = Default
CommLogMode = Default
;--- Test specific properties ---
Server = outlook.office365.com
Port = 995
SSLMode = Implicit
Timeout = 60
Username = email@address.something
Password = password
MsgsLimit = 3

Thank you!

Can you check logs on server side?

The server is Microsoft Office365. Its Microsoft Cloud platform so I can't check the log on the server side. Like I said I'm 99.9% sure the problem is with Microsoft but I was wondering if anybody has had this problem before.

First thing that comes to mind is that Microsoft did something new, and maybe conflicts with hostmonitor.

We cannot find information regarding recent Microsoft changes possibly related to this issue... and I don't think kb842789 is related to this problem.

What is test status? Unknown? Bad?
Reply: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password?

Ok, I did not solve this but I found a good useful workaround. Instead of a POP3 test I used an IMAP test. Strange enough the IMAP test can authenticate with Office365 and the POP3 test can't. Strange thing but it works.

May be you are using different options for POP3 and IMAP protocols?
Could you check SSL settings (menu Options -> Misc -> SSL options)?

No I checked but there is no difference. "Accept SSL/PCT certificates with invalid host name" is checked for POP3 and IMAP. everything else is not checked.

But the POP3 authentication problem only seems to occur with hostmonitor. I tried to connect a couple of email clients other then Outlook, and they all authenticate fine.

If you see the above article, then Microsoft says the encryption method is TLS* v1-1.2. Is this compatible?

Yes, TLS 1.0 should work even if HostMonitor running on older Windows.
We checked code, POP3 and IMAP tests should work with SSL/TLS in the same way...

What Windows do you use? Service Pack? IE version?
HostMonitor version?

We use Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, no service pack. IE version 9.0.8112.16421

Does hostmonitor use IE to authenticate?

It does not use IE but it uses Microsoft Security Protocol Provider
