RMA Client has dynamic DNS. Solutions?

Post by jcooke »

I have seen it mentionned in previous posts on this forum but no real answers / conclusions. I have a number of remote clients that have dynamic ip's and am looking to purchase this software is there is a solution. Has anyone successfully made a script that updates the server when its ip address changes?

Any information would be much appreciated.

You may use host name instead of IP address, I think.

Do you want to install RM agent on every client? I do not think you should install RMA on each host you want to monitor. If computers are located in the same network, HostMonitor is able to monitor them by itself. In such case you may use host name instead of IP address. Could you provide a bit more information regarding your network?

sorry, i didnt explain properly. All sites are remote i.e. across Internet. There is 1 central site, and about 20-30 remote sites with single point of contact (mini server). All of these sites have a dynamic IP address. Apart from installing a dyndns client on them and creating an online account, i wonderred if there was a better way.

My idea was is if the RM agent could establish the connection instead of the host monitor server, basically the reverse of what happens now. Is there a way to tell the client to report back to the server say every 10 seconds.

Thanks

Can the remote computers "see" the ip of the HM server? Or is it behind a firewall or proxy or something?

I think i may have an idea that will help you

Btw, you would like to know any ip address changes, or if those remote computers are alive as well?

hey anthonyp, the ip address of the server is behind a firewall however port forward isnt an issue, this is the server recevies data back from the agent already.

i dont really need to know the ip changes, i just want to know that the remote sites are up, thats about it.

Ok, then i suggest you download snmpsend utility and configure it on all remote computers so that it will send the HM server an snmp trap let's say every 5 minutes, so you will know both the ip of the computer and whether it is alive or not.

But you will need to use port forwarding on your firewall so that all traps are sent to the HM server.

Plus, in order to distinguise each trap, you can add a comment for each computer, like comment:hostname. Only trouble is that you will only need to add as many traps to HM as the number of computers that you have.

My idea was is if the RM agent could establish the connection instead of the host monitor server,
RMA cannot connect to HostMonitor. This will be implemented in future versions
