Problem in Active RMA When Using SNMP Trap

Post by hostmonitor »

hi

I am having a problem with configuring SNMP Trap test when it is tested by active RMA.

In the configuration of Active RMA I selected the SNMP Trap check box and then applied the changes and restarted the agent service. In HM management station i cant receive the snmp traps when the test is done by the agent. while when i change the test by field and make it to be tested by hostmonitor I can recieve the traps.

I suspect its a bug in the agent!! if you faced such a problem or if you have any thoughts please post here.

Cheers

1) Could you please change you nick name? HostMonitor - our software name.
2) Are you sure SNMP Agent sends trap messages to system where RMA is installed?

PS May be you are running HostMonitor and Active RMA on the same system?

1) I cant edit my nickname, I will register again after i finish this. anyway you should not allow me to take it.

2) yes i am sure, the snmp agent on the server sends udp messages on port 162 fine. But as i mentioned before, when i change the tested by from the RMA name to HostMonitor it works fine.

please note RMA is running on remote system not on the Hostmonitor management station.

RMA and HostMonitor are running on different systems. If HostMonitor receives trap messages, this does not mean the same messages can reach system where RMA is running. There are a lot of possible reasons of this problem: firewall, some real-time antivirus monitor, wrong routing table on some router, etc.
If you have some network packet analyzer (sniffer) installed, you may verify if snmp agent send messages to correct address and you may check if these messages reach target system (system where agent is installed).

However for begining I would recommend to check if RMA is able to open port for listening.
If you setup SNMP Trap test item and specify Active RMA for this test, you should see message like "SNMP Trap Listener: UDP port #162 opened for listening" in "sucessful audit log" (please make sure this log file is enabled using rma_cfg.exe utility). If you do not see such message in "sucessful" log file, then you should see some error description in "failure" log file.
By default both log files located in the folder where RMA is installed.

it is working fine now!!!

the problem was, when I configured the SNMP agent service on the remote server that has RMA running, I configured it to send the traps to my HostMonitor management server NOT to where the the RMA is running which is in localhost of remote server. now I configured the snmp agent to send traps on the localhost and now I can see the traps when I make the tested by filed to be the RMA.

thanks for your help Alex
