we have setup hostmonitor on a server where it is installed as a service. we test several servers, disk space, applikation, databases and services. on a backup server we have installed hostmonitor again as a service. there we only test whether or not the hostmonitor service on the main server is up. if not, it should start the service again. now we found out, that this does not work. when the service on the main server is down, the backup host monitor will not start it again. only when i start the host monitor applikation it will do so.
do we something wrong? or is this just a fact or an error?

I think you did not provide account that has necessary permissions to start services. Specify this account on Service page in the Options dialog.
BTW When HostMonitor cannot execute some action, it records information about error into "system" log that specified on Advanced Logging page in the Options dialog. So, you can check that to log to know what's wrong.

Hi Alex

Thanks for your hints. To test, I do the following:

Backup Server = HostMon runs as a service only.
Main Server = HostMon runs as a service only.
I stop the service on the backup server

The main server should send me an e-mail and should start the service on the backup server again.

I get mail:
05.02.2003 07:50:57 “Status : Bad

Systlog shows:
05.02.2003 07:50:57 Error: Cannot open service "HostMonService". The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

I start HostMonitor Applikation on main server
05.02.2003 07:54:51 Monitor started (Syslog)

I get mail:
Status : Bad
Date : 05.02.2003 07:54:53

Status : Ok
Date : 05.02.2003 07:55:01

Status : Ok
Date : 05.02.2003 07:55:54

I can't check it (I don't monitor HM), but when you create a test, you can find the correct name in the service drop down of HM.

If that doesn't work, you can also monitor on the process (instead of the service), which is called hostmon.exe

correct, but as i wrote, the service name is 'HostMonService'. Advanced Host Monitor is only the display name of the service under computer management. yes i can check the process. but can i start it when it fails?

As far as I know, you can just fill in a name, even if it is not listed ("Advanced Host Monitor" in this case).

The only other thing I can think of is to give an extra parameter: /service

"HostMonService" is correct name of the service. "Advanced Host Monitor" is "display name" property of the service. So, use "HostMonService".

Reason to the problem can be lack of rights for the account that you use to start HostMonitor as service. What account have you specified on Service page in the Options dialog? Try to use the same account that you use when start HostMonitor as regular application.

Tks for your feedback alex. But there is something I do not understand. I have set up both HM to check each other und to start the service in case it fails and send me an e-mail. When the HM application is running, everything works perfect. If I shut the application and have just the services running it does not work. When I stop the service, I get the required mail. In the syslog I can read:
Error: Cannot open service "HostMonService". The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
When I start HM I get again an e-mail, the test turns red and the service on the other computer is getting started. After that I get an other mail informing me about the changed status. So where is the difference?

The only thing left (I can think of) is access rights of the account HM runs under when started as a service.

Check the security eventlog if you get an access denied.

well then, why does it work when starting the applikation? And why does syslog tells me something differnet?
"The specified service does not exist as an installed service"
But the service really exist. Otherwise the application wouldn't be able to start it.

Chip,
We (me and Marcus) asked you 3 times: "What accound do you use to start service?"

I still asking the same:
What account have you specified on Service page in the Options dialog? Try to use the same account that you use when start HostMonitor as regular application.
