Service wont start - unknown error

Post by chris128 »

Hi,

We are finding that sometimes when we have HM running as a service and we then open the HM application to modify some tests etc, once we close the application and the service tries to start again it fails. This does not happen all the time, probably about 1 in 20 times and the only way we can get it to start again is to reboot the server... which is obviously far from ideal.

The server is Windows Server 2008 x64 and we are using HM version 8.54

The error logged in the event log when we try to start the service is:
Faulting application hostmon.exe, version 8.0.54.661, time stamp 0x2a425e19, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6001.18215, time stamp 0x4995344f, exception code 0x0eedfade, fault offset 0x0002f328, process id 0x174, application start time 0x01cb0617479bf707.
I've tried setting the compatibility mode of hostmon.exe to Windows XP (SP2) and running the service "as administrator" but neither help.

I've used Process Monitor to watch the Hostmon.exe process as it starts when the service is launched but all I can see is it doing tons of reads from hostmon.ini (which I assume is normal) and then nothing after that, no access denied messages or anything like that. Going to continue trying to troubleshoot it but just wondered if this is a known bug or if anyone has got any suggestions?

Thanks
Chris

We are trying to reproduce this problem but everything works fine so far...
Do you have installed some 3rd party software on your server?

BTW:
Why do you stop and start service? Just to modify test settings?
You may use Remote Control Console for this

Thanks I only just discovered the RCC a few minutes after posting this question. We can use that as a workaround but it doesnt really resolve the problem and I'm sure at some point it will happen again.

There are a couple of other bits of software installed on the server but nothing that I think would interfere at all. Are you trying to reproduce it on a 64 bit version of Server 2008?

Yes, we use Windows Server 2008 64bit Service Pack 2
