1 Server problem

Post by Kris »

Hi all,

My problem is not just HM related, but with all the knowledge around here I thought I post it anyways.

Since yesterday one of our servers has a problem with being monitored.
Also, I can't connect to it using the UNC path to the admin shares (eg. \\SERVER\c$)
This only occurs from the computer running HM.
From any other computer in the network I can reach all the required resources on the target server.

Recently I started disabling NETBIOS on all our servers, so I thought that was the issue.
So I enabled Netbios on the computer running HM, and for a short period of time the target server accepted the tests. But after 10 minutes or so it was in error again, so I thought this might have been coincidental.
But it isn't. Every time I re-enable Netbios on the computer running HM it will test OK once or twice, and then bad again.
Last night all the tests ran OK spontaneously for 1 time, and then went down again.

For example, when I try to get CPU usage, I get an error #53, Cannot connect to the Remote registry.

Again, this only happens from the computer running HM.

Both machines running W2K8 R2 SP1, firewall disabled, same subnet.
And working fine until yesterday.
DNS is OK, both machines resolve just fine.

Tests that do work all the time:
- Ping Target Server
- Performance Counter: \\<Target Server>\Memory\Committed Bytes

Tests that fail
- CPU Usage on Target Server
- UNC Free space on \\<Target Server>\C$
- Performance Counter \\<Target Server>\Process(QVS)\Working Set

Both computers have been rebooted...

Hope that someone has a great idea about this, because I'm kinda lost here....

Thanks!

Tests that do work all the time:
- Performance Counter: \\<Target Server>\Memory\Committed Bytes
Tests that fail
- CPU Usage on Target Server
CPU Usage and Performance Counter test methods use the same protocols and services. Plus Performance Counter test uses Windows pdh.dll (some versions have a lot of bugs).
In other words, CPU Usage test MUST work if Performance Counter test works, CPU Usage test may work even if Performance Counter test fails.

May be you have specified target server in different ways?
E.g. You are using hostname for CPU Usage test, IP address or FQDN name for Performance Counter test?
or may be you have specified user account for Performance Counter test but did not specify account for CPU Usage test?
Account can be specified in Test Properties dialog or Connection Manager (menu Profiles -> Connection Manager). If you are using Connection Manager, could you please check if CPU Usage test method marked?

Hmmm...

There was an entry in Profiles -> Connection Manager that wasn't quite right.... at all... 8)

But that has been there for ages, never was a problem.
I think I used it for test purposes....

Anyway, I changed it to the right credentials and for now everything seems to work again.

[EDIT]
No, cheered to soon... still comes on and off...
Tried testing on IP, hostname, FQDN, doesn't make any difference.
Flushed DNS and ARP tables, no difference...

Thanks!

allright!

Turned out to be a switch in the network that decided to occupy the same IP address as the target server.

Problem solved, case closed :)

Cheers!
