RCC not connecting

Post by havbrew »

I'm getting an issue with RCC not connecting to hostmon.
[7/28/2015 12:36:19 PM] Disconnecting... not connected

[7/28/2015 12:36:21 PM] Connecting... Failed. Connection error

[7/28/2015 12:44:39 PM] Connecting... Failed. Connection error

[7/28/2015 12:52:07 PM] Connecting... Failed. Connection error

Server 2003 SP2
RCC running locally on same machine as hostmon.

If hostmon is started as a service, rcc will connect. close hostmon, rcc stops working.

this is for all users.

0.0.0.0 added to users doesn't work.

checked to make sure that Options ---> Service / log on as account was not locked out and password was correct.

No errors are showing in application log.

Anyone have any ideas?

Close HostMonitor? What exactly this means?
If HostMonitor is not running, sure RCC cannot connect...

Alex,
I have to open the application(user interface) for hostmon for rcc to connect. If I close it, RCC stops functioning. the service should be running without the application being opened.

In 1st post you said "If hostmon is started as a service, rcc will connect"
Now you are saying "I have to open the application for hostmon for rcc to connect"
Sounds like everything works just fine - service works and application works.

I am confused. Could you please explain?

OK,
If I log into the server that hostmon is on and start it as an application, it will allow me in.

If i log into the same server, using rcc, rcc will not connect.

If i log into another server, using rcc, rcc will not connect.

If I log into the hostmon server, open the application. Then, use another computer, rcc will connect.

If I log off the hostmon server, RCC drops the connection.

Actually only ONE instance should be running.
If service is running and you start application, application warns you and stops service (unless you force 2 instances to run - please don't do this).

On Windows Server 2003 you may see HostMonitor icon in system tray regardless of HostMonitor running mode (service or application); you may click on icon and work with HostMonitor GUI even if it is running as service.
So you may easily check RCC settings and status, check connected clients, etc.

So, when RCC cannot connect to HostMonitor?
HostMonitor version?
Any errors displayed by Auditing Tool (menu View)?
Any errors in HostMonitor system log file?

Sound like HostMonitor service is not running.
Are you sure service installed and started?
Please do not start HostMonitor application, just check HostMonitor service
- do you see "Running" status for "KS Advanced Host Monitor" service (short name "HostMonService")?
- do you see hostmon.exe process?
- do you see HostMonitor icon in system tray?

> If i log into another server, using rcc, rcc will not connect.

RCC cannot connect to any server, it cannot connect to Windows. RCC can be connect to running HostMonitor process (application or service - does not matter).

Alex,
Look like the service is NOT running when I log into the server. The icon is not there on login and the hotmon.exe is not showing in task manager.

Sorry,

Alex,
this is also not a new install. We've been running this service for a couple of years. this issue just cropped up today after a server reboot.

Then I assume you did not install or start service.

How to install HostMonitor as Win32 Interactive service
1) Install Advanced Host Monitor package on your system. If you already have Advanced Host Monitor installed, skip this step.
2) Start HostMonitor (hostmon.exe) with the command line parameter "/InstallService". E.g. "hostmon.exe /InstallService". HostMonitor will install itself as a service and display "Service options" dialog. "Service options" dialog allows you to specify some important parameters and then lauch the service. If you do not plan to start service right away, select "Launch service later" option and click Ok. In such case service will be started at system startup. Also you may start service at any time using standard Windows "Services" applet or command line like "net start hostmonservice".

Have you done this?
Do you see "KS Advanced Host Monitor" service (short name "HostMonService") in Services list?

Note: do not start installation program with /InstallService key. Start HostMonitor itself (hostmon.exe) using this command line parameter.

Please check service status using standard Windows utilities.

Alex,
Hostmon is installed as a service. It appears that the service just was hung. The first time I ran net start hostmonservice, it didn't do anything. I ran it again and came back service already starting..... then started. I've logged off the server and back on. Now able to connect using RCC without opening the app.

I'll have to keep an eye on this, then next time this server is rebooted. We are retiring it soon, as W2k3sp2 is no longer supported.

thanks for your help!

No problem.
Any errors in HostMonitor "system" log file? Auditing Tool errors?
Resource usage on the system (handles, user and gdi objects, memory)?
