Question about the connection manager

Post by clerevan »

I tried to make a service test using hostmonitor, but i failed to make it and then they said win32 error#5 which is access denied. I have configured my connection manager for the server that I want to monitor, but it still failed. My domain doesn't have any permission to connect to that server but when I tried with other domain that have permission, I can make that test. My question is can I still use the domain that can't access that server to make a test via connection manager?
and how hostmonitor work? do they use domain authentication first or use connection manager first?

If you have specified account using Connection Manager, HostMonitor uses specified username/password for Windows authentication.
If you did not specify any account, sometimes test may work, sometimes does not (e.g. some 3rd party software could establish connection so HostMonitor/Windows does not need to make new one).

If you want to check some host in different domain, this can be tricky, results depend on domain relations, Windows versions, Service Packs, UAC settings, etc. Sometimes test may work if you specify target host using IP address and does not work when you use hostname/FQDN. Sometimes other way around...
We would recommend to install RMA on some host within remote domain

Right now I already configure the connection manager but it still say access is denied for the service test.

I also use that connection manager to test the drive free space and it's work perfectly. But it won't work for the service in the same server i test my drive free space.

Do you have any idea why it works for the drive free space but it won't work at service test? (I already check the service selection box in the connection manager ofcourse)

Sure, Drive Free Space for remote systems use WMI protocol, it uses different mechanism than Service test.
Why exactly it does not work? Its hard to say - as I said it depends on many factors including installed Service Packs on your systems and UAC settings.

What exactly Windows, Service pack installed on HostMonitor system?
Windows, Service pack on remote system?
UAC?
What errors do you see in Security event log on target system?

HostMonitor started as service? as application?
If service, what account do you use to start HostMonitor service? What account have you specified on Windows Services applet? What account have you specified using HostMonitor Options dialog (Service page in HostMonitor dialog)?

How did you setup target host? Using IP? hostname? FQDN?
How did you setup account in Connection Manager? Using hostname? IP? IP range?

It will run using account you specify for the service.

UAC?
If you are using Windows Vista+ with enabled UAC you should use built-in administrator account.

Hi Alex,

I'm sorry for the long delay. So this is some answer:

1. For the windows version of the p1hostmonservice is windows server 2012 version6.2 (build 9200).

2. He need to know the winver include the service packs of the system that we monitor. (Must check on the VM)

3. UAC: notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer(default)

4. there is no error in security even log, (host monitor computer security even log right?).

5. host monitor started as an application when I do that test.

6. I setup target host using hostname and I also using hostname in connection manager.

I want to make a test for a service in other domain without giving access of my domain account in that domain (so other people can still see the test event they use their own account like what i've done with drive free space).
When I give my giving privilege of my domain account in that target computer ofcourse it works, but I don't want to that, do you have other solution?

Officially we do not support Windows 2012 (there are some bugs related to NT Event Log test and we are not 100% sure IP stack work perfectly...)
Please check HostMonitor system requirements:

No, target system records such log.

Another solution in my 1st answer
