What will be happened if hostmon used by 2 different user

Post by clerevan »

Hello ks-soft, could you explain what will happen if 2 difference user access the same hostmonitor using remote desktop connection?

So we have an entreprise license for hostmonitor and we get a dedicated server for Hostmonitor.

Cases:
1. When 2 administrators does something to that hostmonitor at the same times, what will be happened? Is it okay to to that at the same time? If 1 of the operator make a change, do the second one will receive the changes?
Or
2. When a hostmonitor as windows service already deployed and one of the administrator run hostmonitor without killing the service first, what will be happened??

thank you Ks-soft.

Hello ks-soft, could you explain what will happen if 2 difference user access the same hostmonitor using remote desktop connection?
In short - you will make a mess.
Quote from the manual
--------
Note #4: There is common mistake - install HostMonitor as service, start service, then start application. Please DO NOT start several instances of HostMonitor on the same system using the same installation folder and configuration files. If you do so, several instances will work simultaneously, monitor the same target systems, and launch the same actions. If you modify test settings or profiles using 2nd instance of the software (application), 1st instance (service) will not apply modifications until you restart service. Also, your log files and statistical information will not be accurate when you are running several instances of the monitor using the same log files.
That's why HostMonitor warns you when you are trying to start application while service is running as well.
--------

If several operators need to work with HostMonitor at the same time, use RCC or Web Service
RCC: http://ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/rcc/index.htm
Web Service: http://ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/webservice/index.htm
When a hostmonitor as windows service already deployed and one of the administrator run hostmonitor without killing the service first, what will be happened??
1) Don't kill service or application. Its bad idea. Please STOP service using standard procedures: e.g. use net stop hostmonservice command or simply start HostMonitor application and allow it to stop service. Don't kill process.
2) Do not start application if you did not stopped service.
HostMonitor application checks service status and stops it (unless you does not allow this operation)

could you give the example of the mixed up log if that things happened? or the effect just impact for the first instance of the hostmonitor.

Let's just for example a test schedule has been changed from the second instance, what will happen?

1. the hostmonitor will send 2 different test notification.
or
2. only the second instance notification will be sent by hostmonitor?

You'll get double records in logs, plus some records may be logged with incorrect order.
Let's just for example a test schedule has been changed from the second instance, what will happen?
1. the hostmonitor will send 2 different test notification.
or
2. only the second instance notification will be sent by hostmonitor?
Each HostMonitor will send notifications. First instance will send notifications using old schedule, second will use new one.
Also test settings modifications may be rewritten by first/second HostMonitor instance.

Same applies to global HostMonitor settings.

We stronly recommend to use Remote Control Console (RCC) to manage HostMonitor Service:
http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/rcc/index.htm

Note: HostMonitor 9.XX started on Windows Vista+ allows 1 additional LOCAL RCC connection regardless of your license type and number of additional RCC licenses
