Normally HostMonitor should check your registration codes and warn you when you need new codes BEFORE actual update, unless you have disabled "Update check" option that is located on Misc page in the Options dialog. In such case you may use menu Help->Update check to verify license before update.
Somehow most of customers never read the manual and does read these HostMonitor messages
Also, in the "what's new" pages explaning changes included in the new version, you should add a RED title: New licence required for this version
Its impossible to show such info on web site because different customers have different licenses.
However HostMonitor shows such info. When it checks for updates it checks your license as well. When your registration codes not valid for new version, it shows this using red color, just how you like it.

Reverting to 8.82 did not work either
Could you please explain what exactly means "not working"?
